Antioxidant and Anti-inflammatory compounds are especially abundant in the more deeply-colored fruits and vegetables. Foods such as berries, spinach and green tea are delicious examples. These types of plant foods are not only cardio-protective, but contain anti-cancer components and help support the immune system. Folic Acid, found in vegetables such as spinach, beans and fortified cereals, can run low after several weeks of poor diet. Reserves are small, so an additional amount of folate is often prescribed to ensure adequate intake. Pomegranates and strawberries are excellent sources of vitamin C and antioxidant polyphenols to ensure sufficient intake for making red cells. Tea intake, whether green or black, is associated with a reduced risk and progression of cardiovascular disease. Hot tea has the practical and comforting benefits of opening airways and reducing feelings of stress, and levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Brewed green tea can be used in recipes in place of water or other liquid.
